LEAGUE SCHEDULING INFO

The three bocce courts limits the number of teams that can be reasonably scheduled to play each week to 7 teams. Six teams can be scheduled each week and one team is off each week. Scheduling for the season matches each team to play each other team (called a round robin). A round robin of 7 teams requires each team to play 6 matches. However, since one team is off each week, it takes 7 weeks to complete the round robin.

An example of a league play schedule for 7 teams on 3 courts is below:

Date

Court 1 Court 2 Court 3 Bye Team
WEEK 1 C vs F B vs G D vs E A
WEEK 2 D vs F A vs E C vs G B
WEEK 3 B vs E D vs G A vs F C
WEEK 4 A vs G C vs E B vs F D
WEEK 5 A vs D B vs C F vs G E
WEEK 6 E vs G B vs D A vs C F
WEEK 7 A vs B E vs F C vs D G

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULING INFO

Tournaments are typically scheduled as single elimination (if you lose one match you are eliminated from winning first place) or double elimination (you must lose twice to be eliminated). Due to the number of leagues, limited courts, and time constraints,  tournaments are single elimination tournaments except for 4-team leagues which are double elimination. To allow teams not to end play after losing  only one match, the league uses a modified Single Elimination Tournament to allow losing teams to keep playing. However, if a team loses a match it can no longer win the tournament.

Matches are 2 out of 3 games.

The goal of the bocce tournaments is to eliminate factors beyond the control of the teams during the first two months of league play and give everyone a chance to be a winner at the very end of the season if they have developed into being a very good team. The last place teams in league play can still be the winner.

The bocce tournament schedule is set up similar to tournaments in other sports. For being the league play winner the first place team in league play is given every advantage possible in the tournament schedule. If a bye is available it goes to the first place team and when the first place team plays they get to play the lowest seeded team still in contention playing that day.
